Tree pose (Vrikshasana)

This pose flows naturally on from Mountain pose; I love that they both connect you to the world around you. Tree pose activates the muscles in your legs, ankles and feet and improves balance, which will help when walking on uneven terrain.

  • Start in Mountain pose (see video 1), lifting yourself up so you feel nice and tall.
  • Rotate one knee out to the side, lifting the heel off the floor.
  • Check in with your balance. If you are comfortable, place the sole of your lifted foot against the ankle of your anchor leg, keeping the knee turned out.
  • Move the foot to just below the knee and hold this position.
  • Keep your hands in front of you in a prayer position, out to the sides or raised above your head. Do what feels comfortable for you and as you improve, explore different arm positions.
  • Repeat the posture, lifting the other leg instead.
